GlobalFoundries' strong second-quarter results come amid sustained demand for semiconductor manufacturing and data center construction. Like many technology companies, GlobalFoundries has seized this opportunity, signing multiple agreements this year with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Department of Energy, Renesas Electronics, and others.

CFO Sam Franklin said on the earnings call that second-quarter revenue grew 9% sequentially, with 89% coming from manufacturing services. The company secured three strategic chip design contracts from Lockheed Martin, and 300mm equivalent wafer shipments grew 8% sequentially.

Technology services revenue, including intellectual property, licensing, software, photomasks, non-recurring engineering, expediting fees, and other items, accounted for approximately 11% of total second-quarter revenue. Communications infrastructure and data center business accounted for 16%, growing 20% sequentially.

Tim Breen said on the call: "We continue to see strong momentum, accelerating customer demand, and revenue growth from strategic growth drivers, including optical networking within AI data centers, where our differentiated silicon photonics and silicon germanium technologies are creating significant value for customers."

Breen said Quantum Technology Solutions represents "a paradigm shift that will define the next chapter of high-performance computing for the next decade and beyond" and will "move the quantum industry from prototyping to high-volume production." He said: "Just as CPUs, GPUs, and AI ASICs define today's computing paradigm, we believe quantum processing units (QPUs) will be an integral part of the future. Advanced semiconductor manufacturing securely built on U.S. soil is critical to scaling this technology. Building the right production capacity is now a key enabler."

Breen said the quantum industry is still in its early stages, and he expects quantum-related revenue from manufacturing services to increase by the end of this decade.

Regarding AI data centers, he said the company continues "to build momentum through new customer design wins and increased engagement across the ecosystem."

Last week, GlobalFoundries received a letter of intent from the U.S. Department of Commerce committing up to $300 million in funding to accelerate the development of next-generation silicon photonics technology. Breen said: "Silicon photonics and silicon germanium each play critical roles in optical networking systems, and combined with data center power, represent three high-quality, long-term growth drivers."
